Being clay artists ourselves, we wanted to create a ceramic studio for Houstonians where people of all experience levels can learn about clay and find community.

Meet Abbie

Abbie Edmonson

Abbie Preston Edmonson is a ceramic artist and object maker. She attended Valdosta State University in Georgia, graduating in 2009 with a BFA in ceramics and a secondary in painting.

Abbie is the owner and creator of Box Sparrow Studio, a Houston-based brand creating ceramic works. She is currently an MFA candidate at The University of Houston in the sculpture program.

Abbie is currently serving as Past President for ClayHouston, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization serving the Houston Metropolitan area, and volunteers her time in helping to curate exhibitions at the Lanecia Rouse Tinsley Gallery.

Meet Jess

Jessica Gutierrez

Owner + Founder

Jessica Gutierrez lives in Galveston, Texas, and is the owner and creator behind Jessica Gutierrez Studios.

She received her Master of Science in Nursing (Executive Nurse Leadership) at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Jessica began working with clay in 2016 and quickly became enthusiastic about the medium. Two years later, she became Abbie’s studio assistant and soon after, she decided to pursue art full-time.

Jessica currently serves as Communications Chair of ClayHouston, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization serving the Houston Metropolitan area. She continues to create modern functional ceramics in her home studio alongside her dogs named Churro, Bernie, and Izzy.

Clay Educator

Part-time position (minimum of 6 hours/week)

Our team of Clay Educators provides the on-demand instruction and guidance that makes the HTX Clay experience as unique as it is.

We count on our Clay Educators to inspire members, keep the studio running, and yes, educate!

Requirements

  • Have a welcoming and respectful presence

  • Able to work alongside a team of educators and studio technicians

  • Experience teaching and working with clay

  • Excellent communication and people skills

  • Able to perform daily studio tasks

Expectations

  • Primary role is to educate members of all skill levels

  • Answer questions and provide facility tours

  • Attend 12 paid monthly HTX Clay meetings

  • Schedule and attend paid quarterly individual meetings

  • Commitment of 6 hours/week and one special project/year

  • Daily studio upkeep and maintenance

  • Responsible for creating a welcoming and respectful environment
